The Best Hikes on the North Island (Easy Walks to Multi-Day Adventures)

Why hike the North Island?

The South Island gets most of the alpine glory, but the North Island quietly serves up the most varied hiking in New Zealand — active volcanoes, sub-tropical coastlines, ancient kauri giants and cloud-wrapped ranges you can have almost to yourself. Everything below is reachable with a standard rental car, no 4WD needed.

Easy day walks (1–3 hours)

1. Cathedral Cove Walk — Coromandel

~1.5 hours return · easy · coastal

The most photographed arch in New Zealand for good reason. Park at Hahei, walk down through pōhutukawa forest, and pop out at a beach split by a natural sea cavern. Go early — it's busy by 10am in summer. More on this drive in our Coromandel & Bay of Plenty coastal hikes guide.

2. Karekare Falls & Beach — Waitakere Ranges

~30 min falls loop, or 2–3 hrs combined · easy · Auckland

A 30-minute drive west of Auckland and you're in Piano-movie territory: black-sand surf beach, thundering waterfall, dense native bush. See the full list in Best day hikes near Auckland.

3. Huka Falls Walkway — Taupō

~1 hour one-way · easy · flat

Follow the Waikato River from Spa Park to the electric-blue Huka Falls. Free hot pools halfway. Great warm-up walk on a Taupō stopover.

4. Te Whara / Bream Head — Whangārei Heads

~5 hours return · moderate · Northland

Under-rated ridgeline walk with 360° views over the Poor Knights Islands. If you're heading north, combine with our Auckland to Northland road trip.

5. Tongariro Alpine Crossing

~7 hours one-way · 19.4 km · hard

6. Pouākai Circuit / Pouākai Tarns — Egmont National Park

~5 hours return to the tarns · Taranaki

For that mirror shot of Mt Taranaki reflected in an alpine tarn. The full circuit is a 2-day loop, but you can day-walk to the tarns.

7. Mount Manaia — Whangārei

~3 hours return · steep

A sharp volcanic plug rising straight out of the harbour. Short but relentless — the last section is steps and boardwalk. Panoramic reward.

8. Rangitoto Summit Loop — Auckland

~3–4 hours · lava fields · ferry-in

Auckland's youngest volcano, a 25-minute ferry from downtown. Walking through lava tubes and pōhutukawa on volcanic scoria feels genuinely otherworldly.

Multi-day Great Walks and off-the-radar tracks

9. Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk — Te Urewera

3–4 days · 46 km · moderate

One of NZ's nine Great Walks and the least crowded. Deep native forest, remote bluffs, mist over the lake at dawn. Book huts through DOC well ahead.

10. Whanganui Journey — actually a paddle

5 days · canoe · North Island Great Walk

The one Great Walk you paddle. Worth mentioning because you can drive to either end easily.

11. Pinnacles Track — Kauaeranga Valley, Coromandel

Overnight · 8 hrs return day walk possible

Stay in the historic Pinnacles Hut for sunrise from the summit — one of the best-value overnight walks in the country.

12. Northern Circuit — Tongariro

3–4 days · Great Walk

Includes the Alpine Crossing but adds Ngauruhoe backcountry and huts. If you liked the day walk, do this next.
