How the calculator works
We use the real one-way road distances published by the New Zealand Transport Agency and combined fuel-economy figures from official NZ vehicle fuel-economy data. Rental rates are Nomado's all-inclusive published rates — they include unlimited kilometres, standard insurance and unlimited additional drivers.
Tips to cut your road trip cost
- Pick the right vehicle class. A 7-seater burns ~60% more fuel than a Mazda Demio. Only upsize if you need the seats.
- Fill up away from airports and Queenstown. Fuel in tourist centres often runs 15–25c/L higher.
- Book one-way smartly. Auckland → Wellington one-way fees often beat fuel + return driving.
- Stay 7+ days. Nomado weekly rates beat day rates by ~15%.
- Travel shoulder season (March–May, September–October) for cheaper rentals and quieter roads.
