Pick up in Auckland and return in Christchurch — or travel the other direction — by prior agreement.
The classic New Zealand road trip runs from the sub-tropical Bay of Islands to the alpine peaks of the Southern Alps — and the only way to do it without retracing your route is a one-way rental. Nomado offers easy one-way hire between our Auckland and Christchurch depots, via the Cook Strait ferry. Same all-inclusive pricing, with a transparent one-way fee shown at booking.
One-way rentals are available between our Auckland depot at 19 Tironui Road, Takanini and our Christchurch depot at 305 Marshs Road, Hornby South, subject to availability and written agreement. We do not operate airport, Wellington or Queenstown depots.
Vehicle ferries cross Cook Strait between Wellington and Picton. You book and pay the ferry fare directly and comply with the operator's conditions. Weather may affect sailings; ferry disruption does not automatically entitle you to a rental refund or extension.
Allow at least 10 days for Auckland to Christchurch to make the most of the stops along the way. Our blog has full itineraries: • North Island leg: Auckland → Wellington (4 days) • Cook Strait crossing day • South Island leg: Picton → Christchurch (4–5 days)
Standard insurance, unlimited kilometres, unlimited approved drivers, normal New Zealand toll road charges, normal cleaning and mechanical roadside assistance are included. The $250 one-way charge and separately booked ferry fare are additional.
