The South Island is SUV country. Alpine passes (Arthur's, Lindis, Crown Range), gravel side roads into the high country, and winter snow all favour an SUV over a small car. Nomado's Christchurch SUV rental starts at $49/day with everything included.
Winter snow on the alpine passes, better ground clearance for the drive into Mt Cook, and more space for luggage on a long loop. AWD makes the difference on the Crown Range or Milford Road in shoulder season.
Collect your SUV from our depot at 305 Marshs Road, Hornby South. We do not have an airport depot; free transport from Christchurch Airport takes around 15–20 minutes depending on traffic.
Snow chains are available to hire on request. Please arrange them before pickup so we can provide the correct set for your vehicle.

In summer, no — a 2WD is fine on sealed roads. In winter (June–August), yes — an SUV with AWD and chains is the safer choice.
No. We currently have depots only in Christchurch and Auckland. You can drive to Queenstown and return to Christchurch, or arrange a $250 one-way rental to our Auckland depot, subject to availability.
