Christchurch to Milford Sound is a bucket-list drive through the middle of the South Island — Lake Tekapo, Mt Cook, Wanaka, Te Anau and finally the Milford Road. It's not doable in a day; plan 4–6 days so you can actually see the places you're driving past.
Christchurch → Lake Tekapo → Twizel (Mt Cook detour) → Lindis Pass → Wanaka → Cardrona/Crown Range → Queenstown → Te Anau → Milford Sound. Return via the same road or continue to Invercargill/Catlins for a longer loop.
Day 1: Christchurch → Lake Tekapo. Day 2: Tekapo → Mt Cook (Hooker Valley walk) → Wanaka. Day 3: Wanaka → Queenstown → Te Anau. Day 4: Te Anau → Milford Sound cruise → Te Anau. Day 5: Te Anau → Queenstown or back to Christchurch.
Te Anau to Milford is 120 km and takes 2.5 hours — no petrol, no shops, no cell coverage. Fuel up in Te Anau, leave early (7am) to beat tour buses, and check for chain requirements in winter. The Homer Tunnel operates on lights in peak season.
The Milford Road is avalanche-prone and can close at short notice from May to November. Chains are legally required in your car in winter — Nomado provides them free. An SUV with AWD is strongly recommended for this section outside of summer.

Almost everyone stays in Te Anau — Milford has very limited (and expensive) accommodation. Te Anau to Milford is 2.5 hrs, so leave at 7am for a mid-morning cruise.
