The classic South Island drive — Christchurch to Queenstown via Lake Tekapo, Mt Cook and Wanaka. 490 km, about 6 hours pure driving, but nobody who does it in a day looks back and thinks that was a good idea. Give it 2–4 days minimum.
Christchurch → Geraldine → Lake Tekapo → Twizel → Omarama → Lindis Pass → Wanaka → Cardrona → Queenstown. The Lindis Pass and the descent into Wanaka are two of the most photographed drives in NZ.
Day 1: Christchurch → Lake Tekapo (photograph the Church of the Good Shepherd, dip in Tekapo Springs). Day 2: Tekapo → Mt Cook (Hooker Valley walk) → Wanaka. Day 3: Wanaka → Queenstown via the Crown Range (steepest sealed road in NZ).
Christchurch → Dunedin → Cromwell → Queenstown adds a night in Dunedin and skips Mt Cook. Better in a snowstorm since it avoids the alpine passes.
