Christchurch to Queenstown — the drive at a glance

Distance: ~480 km · Drive time: 6 hours non-stop (plan 2–3 days) · Best season: October–April (sealed year-round, chains may be needed June–August)

Pick up your rental from our Christchurch car rental depot or the Christchurch Airport transport, then point the car south-west. You'll cross the Canterbury Plains, climb into the MacKenzie Country, skirt Lake Pukaki with Aoraki/Mt Cook filling the windscreen, cross the Lindis Pass, and drop into Queenstown via Cromwell.

Day 1 — Christchurch to Lake Tekapo (3 hrs, 227 km)

Head south-west on SH1 then west on SH8 through Geraldine and Fairlie. First look at Lake Tekapo — the turquoise water is real (glacial rock flour). Stops:

• Church of the Good Shepherd — the most photographed church in NZ
• Mt John Observatory — dark-sky tour after sunset
• Tekapo Springs — hot pools with an alpine backdrop

Day 2 — Tekapo to Mt Cook detour, then Cromwell (4 hrs)

Take the 55 km detour up SH80 along Lake Pukaki to Aoraki/Mt Cook Village. The Hooker Valley track (3 hr return) is the best short walk in NZ. Backtrack to SH8, over the Lindis Pass to Cromwell (stone-fruit country) for the night.

Day 3 — Cromwell to Queenstown (1 hr, 60 km)

Detour via Bannockburn wineries or head straight through the Kawarau Gorge past the AJ Hackett bungy bridge into Queenstown.
