Christchurch to Queenstown — The Ultimate Scenic Drive Guide

The basics

The route

Christchurch → Geraldine (1h 45m) → Lake Tekapo (1h 15m) → Lake Pukaki (45m) → Omarama (50m) → Lindis Pass (45m) → Cromwell (45m) → Queenstown (45m)

Must-stop spots

Lake Tekapo Park near the **Church of the Good Shepherd** — possibly NZ's most photographed building. In summer, the lupins along the shore are spectacular. After dark, this is an International Dark Sky Reserve — stargazing tours are world-class.

Lake Pukaki & Aoraki/Mt Cook 30 minutes past Tekapo. The turquoise of Lake Pukaki has to be seen to be believed. Add a **2-hour side trip** up SH80 to Mt Cook Village — the Hooker Valley Track (3 hr return) is genuinely one of the world's best day hikes.

Lindis Pass A high alpine pass through golden tussock country. The summit lookout is worth the stop.

Cromwell NZ's stone-fruit capital. Cherries in December–January are unmissable. The Cromwell Heritage Precinct is a tiny restored gold-mining village.

Best time to drive

What car should I rent?

A mid-size SUV ($49/day) is ideal — better visibility for the alpine sections and easy on the side road to Mt Cook. Snow chains are required in winter and Nomado provides them free.

Continuing on?

From Queenstown you can loop to Milford Sound (4 hours each way) or continue to the West Coast glaciers via Haast Pass. See our South Island itinerary.
