Snowy peaks reflected in glassy lakes, empty roads, half-price flights and the Southern Lights. Here's why we keep recommending a winter NZ road trip.

Winter in NZ is criminally underrated

Most visitors come in summer. They're missing the half of the year when NZ arguably looks its best — and when your rental dollar goes the furthest.

1. Cheaper rentals, cheaper flights Off-peak pricing kicks in from May through August. Our [budget car](/our-rental-cars/budget-car) is at its lowest rate. Airfares from Australia and Asia drop 20–40%.

2. Empty roads & shorter wait times Photograph **That Wanaka Tree** without 50 other people in the shot. Drive the Crown Range without a queue. Restaurant tables are walk-up.

3. Snow on the peaks The Southern Alps look like postcards. Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki at sunrise with fresh snow on the Two Thumb Range is hard to beat.

4. Ski fields are world-class See our [skiing in NZ guide](/blog/skiing-in-new-zealand-guide). Queenstown, Wanaka and Methven (Mt Hutt from [Christchurch](/locations/christchurch)) all within easy reach.

5. Whale & wildlife season **Kaikōura** sperm whales are year-round, but **southern right whales** are easiest to spot in winter. Yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and the world's smallest dolphins (Hector's) at Akaroa are all active.

6. Hot pools, hot pools, hot pools There's nothing like a soak in a thermal pool when it's 3 °C outside. **Polynesian Spa** (Rotorua), **Hanmer Springs** (90 min from Christchurch), **Tekapo Springs**, **Onsen Hot Pools** (Queenstown), free roadside **Spa Park** stream in Taupo.

7. Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) The South Island, especially Stewart Island, the Catlins and Lake Tekapo, gets aurora displays from April to September. Clearer winter skies = better viewing.

8. Mulled wine, fireplaces and Matariki **Matariki** — the Māori New Year — is now a public holiday in late June/early July. Cities light up, communities gather, food festivals everywhere.

Winter driving — what to know - Alpine passes (Lewis, Arthur's, Crown Range, Lindis, Haast) require **snow chains** — Nomado provides them free - Daylight is short: drive between 9am and 4pm where possible - Black ice in early morning shadowed sections — slow down - Our [mid-size SUV](/our-rental-cars/mid-size-suv) and [7 seater SUV](/seven-seater-rental-nz) are best for winter alpine driving
