New Zealand is a surf classroom
Warm-ish water in summer, uncrowded beaches, surf schools that actually teach, and a coastline where you can drive an hour and find a totally different break. If you've never stood on a board, NZ is one of the friendliest places in the world to start.
This guide covers the best beginner beaches, where to book a lesson, what gear you need, and how to plan the road trip — including which Nomado rental car makes carrying a surfboard easy.
Best beginner surf beaches
Ōrewa & Omaha (Auckland east coast) Gentle, sandy-bottom beach breaks about 40 minutes north of [Auckland](/locations/auckland). Great for your very first lesson — small, forgiving waves and a lifeguarded flag zone. Combine with our [Auckland to Northland itinerary](/blog/auckland-to-northland-road-trip).
Mount Maunganui (Bay of Plenty) The classic Kiwi learner beach — long sandy stretch, consistent small waves, and 3+ surf schools in walking distance of the main strip. Two hours from Auckland or a quick add-on to a [Coromandel loop](/blog/central-north-island-road-trip-from-auckland).
Raglan – Ngarunui Beach (Waikato) Not the famous Manu Bay reef break — that's for experts. Ngarunui, just next door, has a dedicated learner section with a full-time surf school. Two hours from Auckland.
Sumner & New Brighton (Christchurch) The South Island's easiest learn-to-surf beach. Both have surf schools, and Sumner is a 20-minute drive from central Christchurch — see our [Christchurch car rental page](/locations/christchurch).
Kaikōura (South Island) Long, mellow left-hander at Meatworks. Learn to surf with seals swimming past — genuinely surreal.
Surf schools worth booking
- Raglan Surf School — Ngarunui Beach, group and private lessons, board + wetsuit included
- Piha Surf School — for confident beginners; heavier waves, expert instructors, safety focus
- Mount Surf Shop lessons — Mount Maunganui, family-friendly
- Learn to Surf NZ — Sumner, Christchurch
Book ahead in Dec–Feb; lessons fill up fast.
What to bring (and what to hire)
Bring: swimwear, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, water bottle, warm layers for after.
Hire (usually $30–60/day): board, wetsuit, sometimes booties. Every school and most surf shops rent — you don't need to travel with a board.
If you plan to surf a lot, buy a cheap second-hand foamie ($150–300 at any surf town) and sell it before you fly home.
Which Nomado car for a surf trip?
You've got two easy options for carrying boards:
- Solo or 2 people, one shortboard each — an economy car with soft racks works fine. Soft racks (Velcro straps that thread through the doors) are ~$30 at any surf shop.
- Group of 3–7 with multiple boards, wetsuits and camping gear — our 7-seater SUV comes with roof racks included on request and swallows longboards, luggage and passengers without a squeeze.
For a mixed group of 3–4, the mid-size SUV is the sweet spot — roof racks fit, big boot, comfortable on long drives.
All Nomado rentals include unlimited kilometres and unlimited drivers, so you can swap the driving between friends after a big surf session.

Safety basics
- Always surf between the flags where lifeguards are on patrol
- Never surf alone as a beginner
- If caught in a rip: don't fight it, wave for help, float parallel to the beach
- West coast beaches (Piha, Muriwai, Bethells, Karekare) are heavy and rip-prone — take a lesson before paddling out
