Clothing (four-season)
- Merino base layer (top + bottom)
- Fleece or light down jacket
- Waterproof shell (not a rain poncho — actual jacket)
- Quick-dry hiking pants + one pair of shorts
- Sun hat + beanie (yes, both)
- Swim togs — you'll want them at hot pools
- Proper hiking shoes with grip (not sneakers)
- Sandals or Crocs for camp
Documents
- Driver's licence (English or with certified translation — see driving in NZ)
- Passport
- Rental agreement (screenshot in case of no signal)
- Travel insurance card
Tech
- Type I power adapter (NZ = same as Australia)
- Phone car mount + car charger
- Power bank (10,000 mAh+)
- Headlamp — you WILL walk to the loo at a DOC campsite in the dark
The often-forgotten
- Reusable water bottle (tap water is drinkable everywhere)
- SPF 50+ sunscreen (NZ UV is savage Nov–March)
- Sunglasses
- Insect repellent (sandflies on West Coast are legendary)
- Reusable shopping bags (all NZ supermarkets charge)
- Snacks for long drives — see our fuel stops guide
