Under 3 hours between stops is the sweet spot for kids under 10. Our favourite family-friendly legs:

• Auckland → Rotorua (3 hrs) via Hobbiton
• Rotorua → Taupo (1 hr) — Huka Falls stop
• Queenstown → Wanaka (1 hr) — Puzzling World
• Christchurch → Kaikoura (2.5 hrs) — seal colony

Car seat rules in NZ

Kids under 7 must be in an approved child restraint. Booster required to age 7 (recommended to 148 cm). Nomado supplies infant, convertible and booster seats for a flat $10/day. Or bring your own — most airlines carry car seats free.

The right rental

The 7-seater SUV is the family favourite: three rows, roof racks for the pram + surfboards + skis, and enough boot space for a supermarket run. Two kids and a small dog? The mid-size SUV does it comfortably.

Download shows to iPads BEFORE you leave the depot — mobile signal drops out constantly on the best road-trip routes. Podcasts like "But Why" and "Story Pirates" burn hours pleasantly.

Packing extras that matter

• Reusable water bottles per kid (fewer stops)
• A shoebox of small snacks per day, per kid
• Wet wipes, one full roll of paper towels
• Sunscreen (NZ UV is brutal Nov–March)
