NZ Fuel Costs & Petrol Stations — What Road Trippers Should Know
Petrol in NZ is not cheap, and stations get sparse fast once you leave the main highways. Here's everything you need to know about fuelling a rental car.

Current pump prices (2026)
- 91 unleaded: ~$2.65/L
- 95 premium: ~$2.85/L
- Diesel: ~$2.05/L (but you'll also pay road user charges — RUCs — as part of your rental)

Cheapest stations
Consistently cheapest chains: Waitomo, Gull, Allied, NPD, Challenge. Avoid BP and Mobil on rural highways — they're usually 20–30c/L more than town stations.

Where the fuel gaps are
Plan a top-up before these stretches: - Desert Road (SH1) — 100 km between Turangi and Waiouru - Milford Road (SH94) — 120 km, only ONE station (Te Anau) - Haast to Wanaka — 145 km - Catlins loop — sparse; fill at Balclutha or Invercargill - Cape Reinga — fill at Kaitaia

Save money at the pump
- Both AA Smartfuel and Countdown/New World fuel discount vouchers stack — a $40 supermarket shop earns you 6c/L off, sometimes more.
- Fill up in bigger towns; the last station before a national park is always the most expensive.
- Don't refuel at the rental depot — they charge $3.80+/L. Fill within 10 km of drop-off instead.
