Why the right apps matter in New Zealand

Mobile coverage in NZ is patchy once you leave the main centres — Fiordland, the West Coast, the Catlins and parts of the Desert Road all have long dead zones. Downloading the right apps (and the right offline data) before you leave your accommodation each morning turns a stressful drive into a smooth one. Here are the 12 apps we install on our own phones before every trip.

Navigation & offline maps

1. Google Maps — the default, but the trick is to download the North and South Island as offline regions before you go. Tap your profile → Offline maps → Select your own map. Works with turn-by-turn even with no signal.

2. Maps.me — free, fully offline, and often shows walking tracks and remote campsites that Google misses. Great backup for hikers.

3. Waze — best for real-time traffic in and out of Auckland at rush hour. Less useful once you're rural.

Fuel & driving

4. Gaspy — crowd-sourced live petrol prices at every station in NZ. Regularly saves 20–40c/litre. On a two-week trip that's easily $100. Pairs perfectly with our NZ road trip cost calculator.

5. NZTA Journey Planner — the official app for road closures, ice warnings and roadworks. Essential in winter — see our winter driving guide for context.

Accommodation, camping & food

6. CamperMate — the gold standard for finding DOC campsites, freedom camping spots, public toilets, dump stations and drinking water. Free.

7. Rankers Camping NZ — traveller-reviewed campsites; complements CamperMate.

8. Booking.com / Airbnb — obvious, but the "map view" is what makes them useful for last-minute road-trip stops.

9. First Table — 50% off food at hundreds of NZ restaurants if you book the first sitting. Frequent traveller favourite.

Weather & activities

10. MetService — the NZ MetService is more accurate than global apps for local mountain and coastal weather. Non-negotiable if you're doing the best day hikes accessible by car.

11. GeoNet — real-time earthquake and volcanic activity alerts. NZ is on the Ring of Fire; this app is peace of mind.

12. AllTrails — download trail maps offline. Perfect if you're following our photographer's guide to New Zealand and need to find viewpoints.
