NZ is a landscape photographer's dream
Short distances, dramatic light, almost no light pollution in alpine areas — and most of the icons are 15 minutes from a sealed road. Here's how we'd shoot it.
The bucket list (South Island)
Roy's Peak, Wanaka — sunrise **Drive time:** 5 min from Wanaka. **Walk:** 3 hours up in the dark for sunrise. The most photographed ridgeline in NZ. Best from **April to October** when the sun rises behind you over the ridge.
That Wanaka Tree — blue hour & sunrise Park lakeside. Best with mist over the lake and Lake Wanaka glass-calm — usually pre-dawn in autumn.
Lake Pukaki + Aoraki/Mt Cook — sunset The Peters Lookout pullout on SH80 has the iconic Pukaki-to-Mt-Cook view. Stay overnight at the Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat for sunrise too.
Hooker Valley Track, Mt Cook — golden hour 3-hour return walk. Best in the last 90 minutes of light — the suspension bridges and Mueller Lake glow.
Lake Tekapo — astrophotography International Dark Sky Reserve. Church of the Good Shepherd silhouetted against the Milky Way core — visible **April to September**.
Nugget Point, Catlins — sunrise The lighthouse on a finger of rock with sea stacks below. East-facing — pure sunrise gold. See our [Catlins road trip guide](/blog/the-catlins-road-trip-from-christchurch).
The bucket list (North Island)
Cathedral Cove, Coromandel — sunrise The sea arch lit golden by the rising sun. The path opens before dawn — most visitors don't arrive until 10am.
Mt Taranaki reflection at Pouakai Tarns An overnight hike. The almost-perfect cone of Taranaki reflected in an alpine tarn — one of NZ's truly iconic compositions.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing — Emerald Lakes Drive to the start, hike in. Best on a clear winter morning when steam rises from the crater lakes.
Hobbiton — twilight tours Pre-book the evening banquet tour for shots of the lit-up Shire after dark.
