North Island
1. Tongariro Alpine Crossing — 19.4 km, 6–8 hrs. Book a shuttle back to your car. 2. Cape Reinga Lighthouse Loop — 2 km, 1 hr. Where two oceans meet. 3. Cathedral Cove (Coromandel) — 5 km return, 1.5 hrs. 4. Mt Taranaki Pouakai Circuit (day option) — Wilkies Pools, 3 hrs return.
South Island
5. Hooker Valley Track (Mt Cook) — 10 km, 3 hrs. Non-negotiable — see our Mt Cook road trip. 6. Roys Peak (Wanaka) — 16 km, 5–6 hrs. Iconic ridgeline selfie. 7. Avalanche Peak (Arthur's Pass) — 8 km, 6 hrs. Steep, spectacular. 8. Key Summit (Fiordland) — 3 hrs. Perfect Milford Road stop. 9. Sealy Tarns "stairway to heaven" (Mt Cook) — 2,200 steps, half day. 10. Nugget Point Lighthouse (Catlins) — 30 min return, more of a walk than a hike, but our Catlins guide says it's unmissable.
