Christchurch to Mt Cook — at a glance

Aoraki/Mt Cook is New Zealand's tallest peak (3,724 m) and the drive from Christchurch is one of the most scenic in the country. It's doable as a very long day trip (9+ hours in the car) but we strongly recommend one overnight in Tekapo, Twizel or Mt Cook Village.

The route

1. Christchurch → Geraldine (SH1 → SH72, 2 hrs) — coffee stop at Barker's fruit-wine store
2. Geraldine → Lake Tekapo (SH8, 1 hr) — Church of the Good Shepherd, first turquoise water
3. Tekapo → Lake Pukaki lookout (SH8, 45 min) — the classic photo of Aoraki filling the horizon
4. Pukaki → Mt Cook Village (SH80, 45 min) — 55 km spur road ending under the Southern Alps

What to do at Mt Cook

• Hooker Valley Track — 3 hr return, mostly flat, three swing bridges, ends at Hooker Lake with icebergs. Non-negotiable.
• Tasman Glacier View — 40 min return walk, great in any weather
• Mueller Hut — full-day hike for the fit, 1,000 m ascent, world-class views
• Mt Cook stargazing — the village sits inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve

Which rental car?

• Summer / dry conditions: any Nomado rental car does it — sealed roads the whole way
