Coromandel & Bay of Plenty Coastal Hikes

Turquoise coves, pōhutukawa-lined cliffs and one perfectly cone-shaped mountain. Coromandel and the Bay of Plenty give you North Island's best coastal hiking in a single road trip.

The Coromandel + Bay of Plenty is a hiking region, not a beach region

Most people drive here for the beaches and never lace their boots. That's a mistake — the ridgelines above these coves are where the real magic is. Below is a loop you can do over 3–5 days from Auckland, hiking a different coast every day.

Pair with our central North Island road trip for the wider driving plan.

Coromandel Peninsula

Cathedral Cove Walk

~1.5 hours return · easy

The obvious pick, and worth every step. Park at Hahei (paid shuttle in peak season — the road is closed to private cars Dec–Feb), walk down through pōhutukawa forest, arrive at the natural sea arch and the beach behind it. Best at low tide, early morning.

Coromandel Coastal Walkway (Fletcher Bay → Stony Bay)

~7 hours one-way · 10 km

The unspoiled tip of the peninsula. Bookable water taxi to shuttle you back. This is where locals go — very few tourists make it this far north.

The Pinnacles (Kauaeranga Valley)

~8 hours return day walk, or overnight

Historic pack track built by kauri loggers. Steep, memorable, panoramic. Stay overnight in Pinnacles Hut for sunrise from the summit — book through DOC well ahead.

Karangahake Gorge Windows Walk

~2 hours loop · easy · torch required

Old gold-mining tunnels through a river gorge. Bring a torch. Kids love it.

Bay of Plenty

Mount Maunganui Summit ("The Mount")

~1 hour return · steep

Iconic cone at the end of Tauranga's most famous beach. Sunrise walk followed by a swim is the local move.

Papamoa Hills

~2.5 hours loop · moderate

Pā sites, panoramic Bay views, less crowded than the Mount. Great in spring when the hills go green.

Ōhope Beach → Kohi Point Walkway

~4 hours one-way · moderate

Genuinely under-visited — Māori pā sites, native bush and a 11 km white-sand beach at the end.

White Pine Bush Reserve

~30 min loop · easy

Micro-walk through ancient kahikatea. Perfect quick stop between Whakatāne and Rotorua.

Which car?

The Coromandel's inland roads (309 Road, Kauaeranga Valley) are winding, some are gravel. A compact SUV or mid-size SUV is more comfortable than a small hatchback. If you're taking surfboards or bikes, our 7-seater with roof racks is a favourite for group beach trips.
