The loop
A circular 7-day road trip from Auckland that ticks off the central North Island's biggest hits — beaches, caves, geothermal wonders and surf. Around 1,100 km in total, very doable in a budget rental car.
Day 1 — Auckland to Coromandel (2 hr) Pick up your car from our [Auckland depot](/locations/auckland). Drive via Thames to **Hahei**. Walk to **Cathedral Cove** (the iconic sea-arch — about 45 min one way) and dig your own pool at **Hot Water Beach** (2 hours either side of low tide).
Day 2 — Coromandel to Waitomo (3 hr 30 min) Cross back through Thames and Hamilton. **Waitomo Caves** is the headline — float through a glowworm-lit grotto, or for the adventurous, **black-water rafting** through underground rivers.
Day 3 — Waitomo to Rotorua (2 hr) via Hobbiton A short detour to **Hobbiton Movie Set** in Matamata (pre-book). Continue to Rotorua. Evening: a Tamaki Māori Village cultural performance and hāngī feast.
Day 4 — Rotorua geothermal day **Wai-O-Tapu** in the morning (don't miss the 10:15am Lady Knox Geyser). Afternoon: **Polynesian Spa** thermal pools or Skyline gondola and luge. Families love **Te Puia** and **Rainbow Springs**.
Day 5 — Rotorua to Taupo (1 hr) Walk to **Huka Falls** and soak in the free **Spa Park hot stream** where it meets the river. Boat to the **Mine Bay Māori rock carvings** on Lake Taupo. Stay overnight lakeside.
Day 6 — Taupo to Raglan (3 hr 30 min) Cross the Waikato to NZ's most famous surf town. **Manu Bay** at Raglan has the world's longest left-hand point break — surfboard hire and lessons are everywhere. Sunset fish and chips at Raglan wharf.
Day 7 — Raglan to Auckland (2 hr) Coffee at the Raglan Roast, then back to Auckland via the Bombay Hills. Drop the car at our Auckland depot at 19 Tironui Road, Takanini.
