Do not try to drive it in one day

Yes, it can be done — but you'll miss everything that makes the North Island special. Here's our recommended 4-day breakdown:

Day 1: Auckland → Rotorua (3 hr) Stop at Hamilton Gardens or Hobbiton along the way. Overnight at a Rotorua thermal hotel.

Day 2: Rotorua → Taupo (1 hr) — full day in geothermal country Wai-O-Tapu in the morning, Huka Falls and Spa Park hot stream in the afternoon.

Day 3: Taupo → Tongariro National Park (1.5 hr) Hike a section of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or visit Whakapapa Village.

Day 4: Tongariro → Wellington (5 hr) Via the Desert Road. Stop in Whanganui for lunch. Arrive in Wellington for dinner on Cuba Street.

Alternative scenic route

If you have an extra day, swap SH1 for the Forgotten World Highway (SH43) between Taumarunui and Stratford — 155 km of remote bush, gorges and one-lane tunnels. Allow 4 hours and bring a full tank.

What car should I rent?
