Milford Sound Road Trip from Queenstown (Do or Don't Drive?)
The Milford Road is one of the world's great drives — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's when to drive it yourself and when to take the coach.

The route
Queenstown → Te Anau (2 hrs, sealed, easy) → Milford Sound (2 hrs, sealed, alpine).
Drive it yourself?
Yes if: - You can leave Te Anau by 6:30 am to beat the coach convoy - You've overnighted in Te Anau (much better than day-tripping from Queenstown) - You're comfortable with mountain driving
No if: - It's winter — the Homer Tunnel gets ice, chains often required - You're doing it as a single day from Queenstown (24 hrs of driving hell) - You want to nap on the way back after the boat
The stops you MUST make
- Mirror Lakes (5 min)
- Eglinton Valley lookout
- Monkey Creek — fill your bottle, it's spring water
- The Chasm — 20 min return walk
- Homer Tunnel — wait 15 min for the traffic light
Boat tickets
Book the 10:30 am or 11:00 am cruise — best light, best waterfalls. Overnight kayak options at Milford are life-changing if you have the time.
Which rental car?
