Month-by-month
December Summer kicks off. Warm, long daylight hours, beaches in full swing. Book at least 3 months ahead — this is peak.
January The warmest month and school holidays — busiest of the year. Lupins blooming around Lake Tekapo. Book early.
February Our favourite summer month — settled weather, slightly fewer crowds than January, the Marlborough Sounds and Abel Tasman at their best.
March Autumn begins. Wine country (Marlborough, Central Otago) is in harvest. Still warm enough for the beach. Prices start to drop.
April Stunning autumn colours in Wanaka, Arrowtown and Hawkes Bay. Comfortable driving temperatures, far fewer tourists. **Best value-for-money month.**
May Cooler but often clear, crisp days. Great for hiking and photography. Some alpine huts close.
June Ski season opens. Queenstown buzzing. Roads can be icy on alpine passes — chains essential.
July The coldest month. Peak ski season. Wellington and Auckland get rain but stay above freezing.
August Still ski season. The Southern Lakes look incredible with snow on the peaks.
September Spring arrives. Baby lambs everywhere. Skies are clear, days are getting longer. Underrated month.
October Wildflowers in the South Island. Tourist numbers low but rising. Daylight saving begins.
November Almost summer. Warm, long days, low crowds. Lupins start appearing. Our pick for a balance of weather and value.
What does this mean for car rental?
Prices spike from December through February — book 2–3 months ahead. April–May and September–October offer the best value. Winter alpine driving requires snow chains, which Nomado provides free.
