Why ski New Zealand?

When the Northern Hemisphere sweats through summer, NZ flips on the snow machines. The season runs June through October with the best conditions usually in July, August and early September. Most fields sit above the tree line — expect wide-open bowls, big views and friendly Kiwi vibes.

The big four around Queenstown & Wanaka

Coronet Peak (25 min from Queenstown) The closest field to Queenstown. Great groomers, night skiing on Wed–Sat, and you can be on the lift 30 minutes after breakfast.

The Remarkables (45 min from Queenstown) The dramatic backdrop you've seen in every Queenstown photo. Genuinely great terrain parks and learner zones — our pick if you're travelling with mixed abilities.

Cardrona (1 hr from Queenstown, 35 min from Wanaka) NZ's most-visited resort. Huge terrain parks, the new Soho Basin expansion, and the famous Cardrona pub on the drive up.

Treble Cone (45 min from Wanaka) The South Island's largest field and steepest terrain — advanced skiers' favourite, with jaw-dropping views over Lake Wanaka.

The Canterbury fields (from Christchurch)

Mt Hutt (90 min from Christchurch) The South Island's most reliable early-season snow. Direct road access from our [Christchurch depot](/locations/christchurch) or the [airport](/locations/christchurch-airport) — pick up a [mid-size SUV](/our-rental-cars/mid-size-suv) and you're carving by lunch.

Porters, Mt Cheeseman, Broken River, Craigieburn The "club fields" inland from Christchurch — basic facilities, brilliant terrain, half the price. Great rope tows, beware steep access roads.

North Island skiing — Whakapapa & Tūroa (Mt Ruapehu) Reachable in around 4.5 hours from our [Auckland depot](/locations/auckland). The only North Island option but well worth it — skiing on an active volcano.

Snow chains, 4WD & the rental car

NZ ski-field access roads are unsealed alpine roads. Chains are legally required to be carried at most fields in winter, even if conditions are clear. Our mid-size SUV and 7 seater SUV include snow chains free and the 7-seater has 4WD plus roof racks if you're bringing your own skis.
