The Auckland to Wellington drive is the North Island's classic run — 640 km down SH1 through Waikato, past Lake Taupō and across the Desert Road. Doable in a long day, but far better spread over 2–4 days with a night in Taupō or Tongariro.
Auckland → Hamilton → Taupō → Waiouru → Bulls → Wellington. All on State Highway 1. The Desert Road (Waiouru to Turangi) is the only stretch that can close in winter storms — check nzta.govt.nz before you go.
Taupō (halfway) is the classic overnight — big lake, thermal pools, cafés and easy walks. Alternatives: Hamilton for foodies, Rotorua for geothermal wonders (adds an hour), or Ohakune for skiers heading south in winter.
Add Tongariro National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage site with the famous Alpine Crossing. Even just the Taranaki Falls walk from Whakapapa Village is worth the detour if you're not up for the full 19 km crossing.
Wellington connects to Picton via the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry (3.5 hrs). Book 4+ weeks ahead in summer if bringing a car. Or drop your Nomado car in Wellington and pick up a fresh one in Picton to save on ferry car fees.

Around 8 hours non-stop, but plan 9–10 hours with fuel and food breaks. Splitting overnight in Taupō makes it far more enjoyable.
The stretch from Taupō south (Lake Taupō, then the Desert Road with Mt Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro on your right) is spectacular. The Waikato section is pleasant but less dramatic.
Yes — SH1 is fully sealed and easy. Our economy or budget cars handle the trip comfortably. Only consider an SUV if you're continuing into the South Island in winter.
