Why leave the famous walks
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing gets 130,000 walkers a year. The Whirinaki Rainforest gets a fraction of that despite being older, greener and arguably more magical. If you've done the highlight reel and want the country locals hike on weekends, start here.
Pair with our full best North Island hikes guide to slot these into a wider trip.
1. Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Forest — Te Urewera
Half-day to overnight · easy–moderate
Prehistoric-feeling podocarp forest of rimu, mataī and kahikatea — the kind of forest the North Island had before humans. Whirinaki Waterfall Loop is 3 hours; the full Whirinaki Track is a 2-day traverse.
2. Mount Pirongia Summit — Waikato
~7 hours return · moderate–hard
Extinct volcano an hour south of Hamilton. Boardwalk through goblin forest to a summit tarn few tourists ever see. Great alternative if Tongariro is weathered out.
3. Kaimanawa Ranges — south of Taupō
Overnight to multi-day
Remote tussock tops and beech valleys. Wild horses. You need to be self-sufficient — no huts on all routes, cell coverage is patchy. Perfect for experienced trampers wanting real solitude.
4. Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk — Te Urewera
3–4 days · 46 km
The least-crowded Great Walk. Book huts through DOC well in advance. Mist rising off the lake at dawn is worth every step.
5. Whangaehu Valley → Waitonga Falls — Ruapehu
~2 hours return · easy
The tallest waterfall in Tongariro National Park, and hardly anyone knows about it. Alpine wetlands and Ruapehu views without the Crossing crowds.
6. Northern Ruahines — Rangiwāhia Hut
~5 hours return · moderate · Manawatū
A tiny alpine hut on a tussock ridge. The classic Kiwi tramping-day-out. Feels a world away — because it is.
7. Aroha Track — Te Aroha
~5 hours return · steep
Straight-up climb from Te Aroha township to a 952 m summit. Historic fire lookout. Kaimai views for days.
8. Motu River Walkway — East Cape
Multi-day · remote
The remotest walk on the North Island. Deep river valleys, huts, no cell signal. This is the trip you plan for years.
9. Hakarimata Summit Track — Ngāruawāhia
~2 hours return · steep · Waikato
Locals-only 1,349-step climb. Waikato River panorama at the top. Great fitness test on a Hamilton stopover.
The insider rules
- Log your intentions on AdventureSmart before every backcountry walk. Cell coverage is unreliable in the ranges.
- Book huts on DOC's website — some backcountry huts are first-come-served but Great Walk huts must be reserved.
- Weather changes fast; if the forecast turns, turn around. See when to visit NZ.
- Kauri dieback: scrub every boot at cleaning stations — Whirinaki and northern forests depend on it.
- Pack list: our NZ road trip packing list has the full gear rundown.
Getting to the trailheads
Many of these are down long gravel roads (Whirinaki, Kaimanawa, Motu). A mid-size SUV makes life much easier — better clearance, better on wet gravel. Groups of 4+ with packs almost always end up in our 7-seater with roof racks.
