DOC Campsites & Free Camping in NZ — A Road Tripper's Guide
You don't need a campervan to camp in NZ. Here's how to use DOC campsites with a regular rental car — legally, comfortably and for under $15/night.

Can you camp with a rental car?
Yes — provided you have a small tent. Most Nomado customers throw a $200 Kmart tent and sleeping mat in the boot and save hundreds on accommodation. Freedom camping in a regular car (sleeping inside) is technically illegal in most councils; use a tent or a paid campsite.
What is DOC?
The Department of Conservation runs 200+ campsites across NZ — most under $15/night, on some of the most spectacular land in the country.
Standard sites — $15/adult, water, long-drop toilets. Book on the DOC website. Basic sites — $8/adult, self-registration on-site. Scenic sites — the best of them: Kinloch (Glenorchy), Lake Mavora, Otehake, White Horse Hill (Mt Cook).
Freedom camping rules
Legal only in a certified self-contained vehicle (you need a green sticker). A regular rental car is NOT self-contained.
