Warmest, longest daylight, everything open — but 20–30% more expensive, campgrounds book out and Milford/Mt Cook are busy. Book 8+ weeks ahead if travelling in Jan.
Still-warm days, autumn colours in the South Island, way fewer tourists, cheaper rentals. If you can only pick one month, pick March.
Cheapest rentals of the year (outside ski towns). South Island snow, epic clear-air alpine drives, quiet trails. Bring warm clothes; an SUV with chains is ideal for the South Island alpine passes.
Spring blossoms, warming weather, still shoulder pricing. Some alpine passes may still have snow into October.
