New Zealand speed limits are simple, but enforcement is tight. Cameras are common and fines start immediately.
Open road / state highway / motorway: 100 km/h. Urban area (any built-up zone with streetlights): 50 km/h. Transition zones on entering towns: usually 80 km/h then 60 km/h. School zones during school hours: 40 km/h. Some coastal and winding roads are signposted 80 or 60 km/h.
Police speed cameras (fixed and mobile) tolerate roughly 4 km/h over. Fines start at $30 and escalate quickly — 40+ km/h over means an instant licence loss. Camera fines follow you to your rental via Nomado (with a small admin fee).
NZ roads are windier and slower than the maps suggest. Google Maps estimates are usually accurate but assume dry conditions and no stops. Add 20–30% to any long drive.
