The left. Just like the UK, Australia and Japan. If you're from a right-hand-drive country, the biggest adjustment is turning at intersections.
New Zealand drives on the LEFT. The driver's seat is on the RIGHT. If you're used to driving on the right, take 10 minutes in the rental car park to adjust before pulling into traffic.
1. Right turns at intersections — you cross oncoming traffic (like a US left turn). 2. Pulling out of a driveway — instinct sends you to the wrong side. 3. Roundabouts — clockwise, and give way to the RIGHT.
Every rental has a big sticker on the dashboard reminding you which side. Take it easy for the first hour, especially after a long-haul flight — jet-lagged wrong-side driving is the #1 cause of tourist accidents in NZ.
