Nomado Car Rental NZ

FAQ

Can I drive from Auckland to Queenstown in one day?

No. It's ~21 hours of driving plus a 3.5-hour ferry between islands. Absolute minimum is 3 days, ideal is 7–10.

It's the most common question we get from overseas visitors. The honest answer: no, and you wouldn't want to. Here's the maths and the realistic options.

The maths

Auckland to Wellington: 8 hours driving. Ferry crossing: 3.5 hours (plus 1 hour buffer each side). Picton to Queenstown: 10 hours driving. Total: ~24 hours of continuous travel with no stops, and only if the ferry lines up perfectly.

Absolute minimum split

3 days: Day 1 Auckland → Wellington, Day 2 ferry + Picton → Christchurch, Day 3 Christchurch → Queenstown. Exhausting but possible if you have a strict deadline.

The right way

7–10 days, splitting overnight in Rotorua, Wellington, Kaikōura, Christchurch, Tekapo/Mt Cook and Wanaka. That's the actual New Zealand experience — see our full Auckland to Queenstown guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fly one way instead?+

Yes. Many travellers do a one-way rental Auckland → Wellington, then fly to Queenstown and rent a second car there. Sometimes cheaper than the ferry + one-way fee.
