Driving in New Zealand: 15 Essential Tips for Tourists (2026)

1. We drive on the left

Yes, like the UK, Japan and Australia. The steering wheel is on the right side of the car. Take it slow for the first 30 minutes and you'll adjust quickly.

2. International driver's licence

You can drive in NZ on a valid overseas licence for up to 12 months — it must be in English or accompanied by an International Driving Permit (IDP).

3. Speed limits - **50 km/h** in urban areas - **100 km/h** on open roads (the maximum) - **80 km/h** when towing Watch for variable speed limit signs near schools and roadworks.

4. Always wear your seatbelt It's the law for every occupant, front and back. Children under 7 must be in an approved car seat — Nomado rents these for $5/day.

5. No phones while driving Hands-free only. Fines are NZ$150 and 20 demerit points.

6. One-lane bridges are common On rural roads, especially the West Coast, you'll often meet a one-lane bridge. A blue sign means **you have priority**. A red and white sign means **give way to oncoming traffic**.

7. Roundabouts: give way to the right Approach slowly, look right, and yield to vehicles already on the roundabout.

8. Driving times are longer than you think NZ roads are winding. A 200 km drive often takes 3+ hours, not 2. Google Maps tends to be optimistic — add 20%.

9. Watch for animals Sheep, cattle and the occasional possum or wallaby. Most stock is fenced but country roads can have stray sheep.

10. Fuel: petrol vs diesel Most rental cars use **91 unleaded petrol** (the green nozzle). Confirm with your rental provider — using the wrong fuel voids insurance. Nomado vehicles run on 91.

11. Winter driving (June–September) Alpine passes (Lewis, Arthur's, Crown Range, Lindis, Haast) can have ice and snow. Carry chains or rent from us. Check NZTA conditions before you set off.

12. Gravel roads Many scenic spots (Cathedral Cove, Skippers Canyon, parts of the Catlins) involve gravel. Drive slowly, increase following distance, avoid sudden steering. SUVs are highly recommended.

13. Drink-driving limit - 250 micrograms/litre breath (about 1 standard drink for most adults) - **Zero** for under-20s. Don't risk it — Ubers are cheap in cities.

14. Petrol stations & EFTPOS Most stations are pay-at-the-pump (insert card, pre-pay). Rural stations may close early — fill up before you head into remote areas.

15. Roadside assistance Every Nomado rental includes free 24/7 roadside assistance. Save the number in your phone before you set off.
